North of Argentina: Tucuman - 2 and 3 December (Days 21 and 22)

On Sunday, we woke up at 4.30am and Alejandro drove us to the airport. It was so early that there was no traffic at all. Around 7am our flight to San Miguel de Tucuman departed. When we arrived at Tucuman airport, many taxi drivers came to us offering a ride to the city. There was no bus option, so we decided to wait for more people to share the taxi. After a while waiting and many taxi drivers telling us that no one would come to share it, we met Yani, an argentinian girl who also wanted a ride to the city's terminal, so we went together for a much better price. We had breakfast in the terminal and got a bus to Tafí del Valle, which was a 3 hour ride from San Miguel.

When we arrived at Tafi del Valle, we walked to our hotel Cabanas Sayacuna Huasi, which is 20 minutes walk from the village. where we had a private big and nice shed. After leaving our bags there, we went for lunch in a gas station as many places were closed. The food was unexpectedly good, we tried empanadas and tamales. After lunch we went to explore the village with Yani, asking for a tour in the tourist office. Then we went back to our shed to rest and went out for dinner in the restaurant Moreno, which was next to the accommodation. Ari ate a huge milanesa and I ate roast lamb, we tried cayote (a desert that mixes cheese and fruit in syrup). The food was very tasty and cheap.

Next day we woke up and walked to the village to start a tour at 9am from Tafí to Quilmes with Yani and Micaela, another argentinian girl that was staying in the same hostel as Yani. We were just 4 of us in the tour and the driver, who explained us the difference in the landscape and vegetation between the Tafi Valley, which was humid and full of vegetation, and Valles Calchaquies, more arid and semi desertic vegetation. It was funny because we said like a hundred times: “see how the vegetation is changing”. The first stop of the tour was at Mirador el infernillo, where we had nice views over Valle del Tafí. We continued to Amaicha del Valle, where we visited Museo Pachamama and had lunch with all the group in a local restaurant with a very cheap menu. We waited for long for the food to be served, but it was very nice.

In the afternoon we visited Ruinas de Quilmes, the ruins of the old city of the Quilmes tribe, wich had almost 20.000 people and was destroyed by the Spanish in the 17th century. The original Quilmes were forced to walk to Buenos Aires and most of them died in the long way. After the visit to the ruins, we stoped in the road Ruta Nacional 40, the main one in the valley, where we said goodbye to the group and hitchhiked to Cafayate. A delivery van stopped (the second vehicle going in our direction) and drove us to Cafayate. We slept at Casa del Árbol hostel, which was close to the main square. We bought some cheese and sausage in a supermarket and had dinner at the hostel.
